Dr. jur. Akanksha Bisoyi
Researcher, lecturer, and legal designer at the intersection of emergent technology and the rule of law.
Hi, I am a Post-doctoral Researcher and Lecturer at the Technical University of Munich, where I work with Prof. Dr. Christian Djeffal at the Professorship of Law, Innovation, and Legal Design. Since April 2026, I hold the Friedrich Schiedel Fellowship at the TUM Think Tank, with my project Visions of Justice Space.
My research explores the intersection of law and emerging technologies, including blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and the metaverse. I am particularly interested in designing and developing legal models and interactive platforms to better understand how these technologies can be governed through principles of legitimacy and the rule of law. My doctoral thesis, Blockchain and Legitimacy – The Rule of Law by Design, was awarded magna cum laude in September 2024.
Originally a lawyer from India, I earned my Bachelor of Arts and Law with Honours at the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai. I later pursued a Master’s degree in International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. My doctoral thesis was inspired by my work at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Geneva, where I engaged with issues at the crossroads of international law, technology, and development.
Before embarking on my PhD in Germany, I took a short break from academia and returned to India, where I co-founded a grassroots organization, based in Odisha (my home state) focused on environmental initiatives and educational programs for underprivileged children. This experience reinforced my belief in the transformative potential of technology for social development and continues to shape my academic work today.
